What does 국뽕 (gukppong) mean? From a forum jab to a YouTube genre
국뽕 (gukppong) blends “nation” with the Korean slang name for meth: being high on national pride, or content made to give you that high. It spread as a forum jab in the early 2010s and now names a YouTube genre.
At a glance
- Meaning
- A blend of 국 (nation) and 히로뽕, the Japanese-derived name for philopon, or meth. It means being high on national pride, or content built to stoke that feeling.
- Origin
- Namuwiki points to a DC Inside history forum and says it took off from late 2011. Who first used it, and when, is unconfirmed.
- In English
- No set translation. English-language outlets write “gukppong” and gloss it as a rush of national pride.
- Careful
- People say it lightly (“the 국뽕 is rising”), but it began as a jab at excessive patriotism. Pinned on someone else's patriotism, it can sound like an accusation.
Another “why foreigners are shocked by Korea” video has landed on our editor's YouTube home page, the third this week. Clicking feels a little proud, and finishing feels a little embarrassing. That odd feeling has a name, and the back half of the name is a drug.
How did 국뽕 (gukppong) spread? Twenty years in one line
January 2007
일뽕 came first
According to Namuwiki, 일뽕, for someone high on Japan, came first. The formation comes from saying you got a hit of 뽕 when something gives you a buzz.
Late 2011
국뽕 takes off
Namuwiki says a DC Inside history forum is usually named as the starting point, while adding that the origin isn't clear.

When the national team struggled at the World Baseball Classic, baseball forums poured out the word and it spread widely then, Namuwiki says.
2015
The age of “Jumo!”
The Korea Herald cites the “Jumo!” (“Barkeep!”) comments after Son Heung-min joined Tottenham as part of this trend. It also recalls reporters in Park Ji-sung's Manchester United years trying to draw praise out of foreigners.

The “gukppong coin” critique

YouTube money

The question at the end of the timeline is still open. In a Korea Times column, Pace University professor Min Seong-jae noted that gukppong content is cheap, profitable and boosted by algorithms, and argued that Korea's achievements don't constantly need foreign validation. Kwangwoon University professor Lee Jong-hyuk told The Korea Herald to be wary of both 국뽕 and its opposite, 국까 (reflexively trashing Korea). As a word that started by mocking media hype, it's a neighbor of 기레기 (“trash reporter”), and finishing one of those videos can bring on a 현타 (a sudden reality check).

So: 국뽕 names being high on pride, not pride itself. Feeling proud is no sin, but when the thumbnails start being stunned, it's worth checking the source. Our editor clicked again today, and this time looked up the source afterward. If you have a sharper definition, add it to the 국뽕 entry in the dictionary.
