Timeline

How did 지못미 spread? A timeline

  1. 2001

  2. 2002

    A line of mourning

According to Namuwiki, the phrase first drew wide attention in online posts mourning Shin Hyo-sun and Shim Mi-seon, two schoolgirls killed by a U.S. military vehicle in 2002. It began a long way from a joke.

  3. Early 2008

    Shrunk to three syllables

Namuwiki says it was used again after the Sungnyemun gate fire in 2008. Around then the sentence was shortened to 지못미 and travelled through forums and comment sections.

  4. Mar 15, 2008

Yonsei Chunchu listed 지못미 as internet slang alongside 뭥미 and 안습, defining it as expressing “pity, sympathy or comfort.” In the same piece, 65.3% of 866 students surveyed said they used internet slang.

  5. Sep 20, 2008

    Infinite Challenge's “지못미” special

  6. 2014

    Heavy again

Namuwiki notes that the phrase was used more and more as humor in the 2010s, but after the Sewol ferry disaster in 2014 it returned as a line of mourning.

You've had no reason to say 지못미 yet. Your photo albums are at peace. Congratulations.

Follow the timeline and 지못미 turns out to be a rare word with two faces. The same sentence is mourning in front of a tragedy and a punchline in front of a comedian in makeup, so it pays to read the room. It was popular at the same time as 안습 (eyes welling up), and it shares a home show with another Infinite Challenge catchphrase, 무야호.
