What does 엄근진 (eomgeunjin) mean? Strict, stern, serious — from a jab to almost a compliment
엄근진 (eomgeunjin) takes the first syllables of 엄격 (strict), 근엄 (stern) and 진지 (serious). It began as a DC Inside meme mocking people who get far too serious about small things; in the 2020s it's also used to wryly describe genuinely solemn moments.

Our editor sent the group chat “The meeting's at 10 tomorrow, right.” — full stop included. A junior colleague replied: “You're very 엄근진 today.” The editor was neither strict nor stern. The period was the problem. Where did these three syllables come from?
How did 엄근진 spread? A timeline
2014
“Strict, serious” appears
According to Namuwiki, the phrase 엄격 진지 (strict, serious) appeared in a post called “A Day in the Life of a Baseball-Board User” on DC Inside's Korean baseball board, and spread quietly around the site.
2015
“Stern” joins
The same page says the “Prison Diary” posts went viral and added 근엄 (stern), completing 엄격 근엄 진지. The image that spread with it shows a stern-faced patrol squad whose scariest power is handing out demerit stickers.
After 2015
Teasing the perpetually offended
Namuwiki explains that early 엄근진 mocked or imitated people who got worked up over trivial things. The person saying it wasn't being serious at all.

Lee Jung-jae's wrong answer
HuffPost Korea reported that on a V LIVE movie talk for Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days, the cast played a slang quiz. Given 엄근진, Lee Jung-jae guessed “엄마, 근처에 오시면 진짜 전화 주세요” — “Mom, if you're nearby, really do call me.”

In a column headline
Konkuk University professor Son Suk-choon, in a Media Today column titled “Don't be strict, stern, serious? Just be fun?”, defined 엄근진 as slang for “acting strict, stern and serious,” and argued the press actually needs more of it.
2020s
From teasing to describing
Namuwiki notes the mocking use survives, but the word is now often used to describe genuinely strict or solemn situations with humor.

Nowhere near 엄근진. You're probably the group chat's mood-maker.
What the timeline shows is that the teasing changed direction. It began as a jab at people who got upset over small things; now it's an affectionate label for a solemn cat or a focused little brother. Its cousin 진지충, with the suffix 충 (“bug”), is a much harsher insult — don't treat them as equals. Too much 엄근진 can turn a room 갑분싸 (suddenly awkward), and one 엄근진 remark can land as a 팩폭 (a fact bomb).

So: 엄근진 started as DC Inside teasing, passed through Lee Jung-jae's wrong answer and a professor's column, and now gets attached to stern-looking cats. Since that day our editor has used a tilde instead of a period in the group chat. The meeting is still at 10. If you have a sharper definition, add it to the 엄근진 entry in the dictionary.
