What does 내돈내산 (naedonnaesan) mean? The Korean slang that became a “not sponsored” badge

내돈내산 (naedonnaesan) is short for “bought it myself, with my own money” — a label saying a review isn't an ad. Korea's 2020 YouTube undisclosed-ad scandal gave it real weight, and regulators have since flagged more than 100,000 hidden-ad posts in five years.

At a glance

Meaning
Short for 내 돈 주고 내가 산, “bought myself, with my own money.” It marks a review as unsponsored and emphasizes its honesty.
Origin
YouTubers and influencers started using it to show a post wasn't an ad. Who coined it, and when, isn't known.
Turning point
In August 2020, popular YouTubers admitted one after another to undisclosed ads; on September 1 that year, the Fair Trade Commission's revised endorsement guidelines took effect.
Numbers
The FTC's monitoring flagged 108,709 undisclosed-ad social posts from 2021 to 2025 (Seoul Economic TV, data via Rep. Park Sung-hoon).

Last week our editor saw an Instagram review of a cordless vacuum tagged #내돈내산 and added it to the cart. Just before paying, they spotted #협찬 (“sponsored”) buried among twenty hashtags at the bottom. They'd be buying it with their own money, sure. Whose money paid for the review was another question.

Our editor isn't alone. According to Fair Trade Commission data reported by Seoul Economic TV on October 21, undisclosed social-media ads — including ones dressed up as 내돈내산 reviews — topped 100,000 in five years. Today we trace how a four-syllable abbreviation became a certificate of trust, and how often that certificate gets forged.

What does 내돈내산 (naedonnaesan) mean?

내돈내산

Short for “bought it myself, with my own money” (내 돈 주고 내가 산): something you paid for with no sponsorship, used to say a review isn't an ad.

In Korean: '내 돈 주고 내가 산'의 줄임말. 협찬이나 광고비 없이 직접 돈을 내고 산 물건이나 서비스라는 뜻으로, 후기가 광고가 아니라는 점을 밝힐 때 쓴다.

In August 2020 Etoday glossed it as “something I bought with my own money,” a phrase YouTubers stressed when introducing products; Financial News gave the same reading in February 2023. It works two ways: as a hashtag (#내돈내산 후기, “self-bought review”) or in speech (“이거 내돈내산이야,” “I bought this myself”). These days it covers not just products but restaurants, salons and trips — anything you paid to experience.

Where does 내돈내산 come from? Proof that it isn't an ad

It started on social media awash in sponsorships. With every review suspected of being paid, YouTubers and influencers began tagging posts with this phrase to say “I bought this myself.” Where sponsorship is the norm, not being sponsored becomes a selling point of its own.

The word got heavier in the summer of 2020. According to Etoday, after a streamer's revelations on a live broadcast in early August, popular food and beauty YouTubers posted apology videos one after another, admitting they'd taken money for content without disclosing it; some quit. As cases surfaced of creators claiming 내돈내산 while actually being paid, the four syllables became both a sign of trust and a target of suspicion.

Why it caught on

Why did 내돈내산 catch on? Three reasons

One: there were too many ads. When every search for reviews turns up sponsored ones, what shoppers need most isn't information but an answer to “did this person get paid?” 내돈내산 answers that in four syllables, up front.

Two: the hidden-ad scandal raised the stakes. Etoday argued the 2020 backlash was especially fierce because, unlike celebrities wearing sponsored clothes on TV, YouTubers had deliberately hidden the ads, turning viewers' sense of closeness and trust into betrayal. From September 1, 2020, the FTC's revised guidelines required paid endorsements to be labeled as ads. Once the rule existed, a label saying you were outside it became more valuable.

Three: platforms made room for it. As a searchable four-syllable hashtag, it fits blog titles, Instagram tags and shopping reviews alike. And like 꾸안꾸, another first-syllable abbreviation, it's easy to unpack once you've heard it.

Data

내돈내산 by the numbers: 108,709 hidden ads flagged

On October 21, Seoul Economic TV reported data that Rep. Park Sung-hoon (People Power Party), a member of the National Assembly's National Policy Committee, obtained from the Fair Trade Commission. FTC monitoring flagged 108,709 undisclosed-ad posts on social media from 2021 through 2025. The headline itself referred to hidden ads “disguised as 내돈내산.”

Undisclosed-ad social posts flagged by FTC monitoring, by year
  • 202117020 posts
  • 202221037 posts
  • 202325966 postsfive-year high
  • 202422011 posts
  • 202522675 posts

By sector, in 2025 “other services” such as restaurants and hair salons led with 5,791 cases (25.5%), followed by clothing, textiles and personal goods (3,725) and health and hygiene products (3,500). That works out to a little over 60 a day — meaning that while our editor was choosing lunch, a not-really-내돈내산 review was going up somewhere.

Can you always trust a 내돈내산 review?

Not necessarily. In November 2025, KBS reported on a company that refunded customers the price of a product if they posted a 내돈내산 review — effectively paying for it. Pay first, get refunded later, and it's 내돈내산 in form and an ad in substance. In the end, what matters more than the four syllables is whether the review lists the downsides, and what's hiding in the hashtags at the bottom.

FAQ

내돈내산 (naedonnaesan): frequently asked questions

Q. What does 내돈내산 (naedonnaesan) mean?

It's short for 내 돈 주고 내가 산, “bought it myself, with my own money.” It marks something you paid for without sponsorship, and is used to say a review isn't an ad.

Q. Where does 내돈내산 come from?

YouTubers and influencers began using it to set their posts apart from sponsored reviews. Who coined it and when isn't known. After the August 2020 undisclosed-ad scandal, it became a key marker of a review's honesty.

Q. What's 내돈내산 in English?

“Not sponsored,” “I paid for this myself” or “bought with my own money.” As a hashtag, #notsponsored does the same job.

Q. Do 내돈내산 reviews need an ad label?

The FTC's endorsement guidelines require paid endorsements — money or free products — to be labeled as ads. A genuinely self-paid review with nothing in return doesn't qualify, but if you later get refunded or receive a perk, it may count as an ad whatever it calls itself.

Q. How are 내돈내산 and 뒷광고 related?

뒷광고 (“back-door ad”) is content made for pay without disclosing it. 내돈내산 is the opposite: a statement that nothing was paid. So the most problematic case is a hidden ad dressed up as 내돈내산. FTC monitoring flagged 108,709 such social posts from 2021 to 2025.

So 내돈내산 is a four-syllable guarantee that a review can be trusted. The trouble is that guarantees get forged. Our editor took the vacuum out of the cart and is now looking for a review with at least three lines of complaints. If you have a sharper definition, add it to the 내돈내산 entry in the dictionary.
