Our editor's nephew is in fourth grade. Playing an online game, he was told by a stranger, “잼민이, get out.” Asked what it meant, he said: “They call you that if you're just in elementary school.” He said it with a laugh, but he didn't look too happy.
Seven years of 잼민이, step by step
Around 2019
From a voice to a name
Namuwiki, a Korean user-edited wiki, says Twitch viewers coined it around late 2019, amused by “Jaemin,” a child's text-to-speech voice that read out donation messages. At first, it says, the word was for playful young viewers. That date comes from the wiki, not an official record.

EBS apologizes
Public educational broadcaster EBS used the variant 잼민좌 in a Twitter post, drew criticism, and apologized, saying it had thought the word was a trendy term for a funny kid (Kyeonggi Ilbo). So even a public educational broadcaster had picked it up.
Mar 2022
Seven in ten students
ChildFund Korea asked 500 students from fourth grade to the second year of high school. 70.2% (351) said 잼민이 talks down to or demeans children (YTN).
May 2022
Named as hate speech
On YTN Radio, media rights researcher Kim Eon-kyung named it a prime example of hateful language used to mock or dismiss children. Around the same time, the National Human Rights Commission issued an opinion on related terms like 주린이 (“stock-market kiddie”).
Jun 2023
“Please call them children”
The National Center for the Rights of the Child produced a glossary of respectful terms. A June 30 government news article suggested “child,” “elementary schooler,” “young friend” or simply the child's name in place of 잼민이.

The offshoot 젬민이
Merged with Google's AI Gemini, it produced 젬민이, a jab at people who leave every small decision to AI. A word that puts down kids became raw material for teasing adults.
What does 잼민이 (jaemmini) mean?
잼민이
A put-down for elementary schoolers, also used to mock anyone acting clumsily or immaturely in game chats or on streams. Criticized as demeaning to children.
In Korean: 초등학생을 낮잡아 부르는 말. 게임 채팅이나 인터넷 방송에서 서툰 언행으로 주변에 불편을 주는 사람을 조롱할 때도 쓴다.
The word runs along two tracks. One points at actual children; the other teases anyone of any age who behaves childishly. The second can pass for a joke among adults, but its premise is still “childish = child.” That's why Korea's government news service says the word's meaning has faded into mockery of anyone naive.
