What does 오히려 좋아 (ohiryeo joa) mean? The four-syllable comeback that became a Gag Concert sketch

오히려 좋아 means “actually, even better”: what you say when something goes wrong, to laugh it off as a win. It started on game streams, spread through streamer Chimchakman's channel, and in 2026 became the name of a sketch on KBS's Gag Concert — though Chimchakman himself says he's just the “distributor,” not the originator.

At a glance

Meaning
“Actually, even better.” Said when things go wrong, focusing on a small upside. Sometimes sincere, sometimes wry self-mockery.
Origin
It was used on internet game streams. In 2025, Chimchakman said it “was already popular in internet broadcasting” and called himself a mere “distributor” (Newsen).
Spread
It went wide via Chimchakman's channel, and in January 2026 KBS's Gag Concert launched a sketch with the same name. In April, Chimchakman appeared in it himself.
As an idiom
The closest classical idiom is 전화위복 (轉禍爲福), “misfortune turned to fortune.” The difference: 오히려 좋아 doesn't wait for the outcome; it declares the win on the spot.

Our editor ordered boneless chicken for lunch and got the bone-in kind. While they debated sending it back, a younger colleague said, “오히려 좋아. Bone-in tastes better anyway.” Come to think of it, it did. That's the power of these four syllables: nothing about the facts changes, but the mood does. Today we follow the phrase from game streams to the Gag Concert stage.

Timeline

Where did 오히려 좋아 come from? Ten years, one line

  1. Before 2016

    Comfort on StarCraft streams (Namuwiki)

Namuwiki says the phrase was used in StarCraft's pro league to reassure teammates nervous about a bad matchup, then became a comeback cheer on streams by former pro gamers. It also mentions a Lineage streamer saying “오히려 좋아요” after a failed item upgrade. None of this has been confirmed by the press.

  2. Early 2018

    “무히려 좋아” (Namuwiki)

According to Namuwiki, a League of Legends streamer on KakaoTV kept brushing off waves of chat criticism with “오히려 좋아,” which viewers turned into the meme “무히려 좋아.” As streamers moved to Twitch, the original form spread.

  3. 2019

On the official Worlds broadcast (Namuwiki)

Namuwiki says commentator CloudTemplar saying “오히려 좋았다” (“it was actually better”) on the official 2019 League of Legends World Championship broadcast helped it spread.

  4. November 18, 2023

    The flip side of 이생망

Money Today linked young Koreans' frequent 오히려 좋아 to a push to see failure positively — the opposite of the once-popular 이생망 (“this life is ruined”). In the same piece, Lee Su-jin of Seoul National University's Consumer Trend Analysis Center said it's less a claim that things are good than a self-deprecating “this'll do.”

  5. February & May 2025

    Chimchakman: “I'm just the distributor”

On the web show Salon Drip 2 in February, Chimchakman said 오히려 좋아 was already popular in internet broadcasting and that he was only a “distributor.” On KBS's Problem Child in House in May, he said it spread from his channel, and co-host Joo Woo-jae called it the ancestor of Jang Won-young's “럭키비키” (Newsen).

  6. January 4, 2026

    A new Gag Concert sketch

KBS's Gag Concert launched a new sketch called “오히려 좋아,” in which a Jeju-bound flight hijacked to Hawaii leaves the passengers delighted (official Gag Concert channel).

  7. April 5, 2026

    The non-originator takes the stage

At comedian Kim Ki-yeol's invitation, Chimchakman appeared in the sketch. The press described him as one of the streamers who spread the meme, and he played a “world-breaker” who pokes holes in the sketch's premise (Newsen).

So nobody can say for sure who said 오히려 좋아 first. The most famous person tied to it says he isn't the originator, and the people named as originators have never been confirmed by the press. Not finding the origin? Take it the way the phrase would. 오히려 좋아.

What does 오히려 좋아 (ohiryeo joa) mean?

오히려 좋아

“Actually, even better”: said when something goes wrong, focusing on a small upside and taking it as a win. It can be sincere optimism or a wry way of laughing off a bad situation.

In Korean: 일이 틀어졌을 때 작은 장점에 집중하며 '그게 더 잘됐다'고 받아들이는 말.

On Problem Child in House, Chimchakman described it as focusing on a tiny upside when things are bad. That puts it in a family of similar phrases. If Jang Won-young's 럭키비키 goes a step further — “so actually I'm lucky” — 오히려 좋아 steps back and smiles. It's different from 중꺾마, “the unbroken heart,” too: 오히려 좋아 is what you say after you've already been knocked down. And if someone says 오히려 좋아 about your misfortune, that's 킹받네 territory.

Q. Where does 오히려 좋아 come from? Did Chimchakman start it?

It was used on internet game streams and went wide through Chimchakman's channel.
