At a glance

Meaning
“Is that my business?” — i.e. “not my problem.” It signals you don't care about someone else's situation.
Built from
알 바 (“something I need to know”) + the question ending -노. Usually said as a comeback: “그게 내 알빠노?” (“Is that my problem?”).
Spread
It solidified in online streams and communities; in 2023 it made news as “most hated slang.” It reached people in their 40s in 8 weeks (Edaily analysis).
Careful
Even as a joke it can sound dismissive. Never use it on someone sharing a real worry.

In a team meeting, someone said, “This quarter's numbers aren't great.” A new hire muttered, “Is that my 알빠노…” The room froze for about three seconds. The only person who laughed was the new hire's fellow new hire.

On Google, 알빠노 is searched alongside “meaning,” “origin,” “etymology” and “in English.” When Edaily analyzed Naver search data, it took only 8 weeks for the word to spread from people in their early 20s to people in their early 40s — which means plenty of managers figured it out fast.

Meaning

What does 알빠노 mean?

알빠노

Korean slang for “not my problem” — a quick way to show you don't care about someone else's issue.

In Korean: '그건 내 알 바 아니다'라는 뜻의 신조어.

알 바 means “a thing one needs to know.” Add the question ending -노 and you get a retort: “Is that something I need to know?” That's why it usually comes as a comeback — “그게 내 알빠노?” (“Is that my problem?”). If the similar 어쩔티비 is for winning an argument, 알빠노 is for ending the conversation.

Where does 알빠노 come from? A line that hardened in online streams

“Not my business” is an old phrase in Korean. It became the single word 알빠노 through online streams and communities. Namuwiki describes it as a meme connected to League of Legends live streams; from there it spread to forums, where the question form “~가 내 알빠노?” became standard.

Why it caught on

Why did 알빠노 go viral? Three reasons

One: short and blunt. Three syllables and the conversation's over. People know a one-word shrug can hit harder than a long excuse.

Two: it voices exhaustion. For people already stretched thin, 알빠노 works as a shield against other people's problems — though to everyone else, a shield can look like a wall.

Three: you can aim it at yourself. Say “tomorrow-me's 알빠노” and the rudeness disappears, leaving only the joke. That's mostly how the word survives today.

Debate

알빠노 in the news: the “most hated slang” debate

In May 2023, Money Today reported on a post by a doctor on Blind, an anonymous app for office workers, titled roughly “The slang I hate most: 누칼협 and 알빠노.” The writer said the words were deflating to hear and reflected a society growing indifferent to one another. Many commenters agreed; others countered that the words are mostly used online, or that everyone is simply struggling.

The debate didn't kill the word. Per Edaily's analysis, 알빠노 took 8 weeks to spread from ages 19–24 to ages 40–44. In the same study, 테토남 took 7 weeks and 오운완 took 21. The irony: a word people loved to criticize spread quickly anyway.
