What does 손절 (sonjeol) mean? How a stock-market term came to end Korean friendships

손절 (sonjeol) comes from 손절매, selling a stock at a loss before it falls further, and today it mostly means cutting someone out of your life. In 2025 it even got a Korean linguistics paper of its own.

Our editor has more than 1,200 phone contacts. Last week they started clearing them out and gave up after 30 minutes: choosing who to delete was heavier than expected. A junior colleague leaned over: “That's 손절. It's supposed to be hard.”

There's a reason a word from the trading screen ended up in contact-list cleanups, and some people have studied that reason seriously. The 2025 paper Etoday wrote about put 손절 right in its title. Today we follow these two syllables from stocks to people.

Meaning

What does 손절 (sonjeol) mean?

손절

Cutting someone off before you lose any more. From 손절매, selling a stock at a loss, it's now used far more for ending relationships with friends, partners or coworkers.

In Korean: 더 큰 손해를 보기 전에 관계를 끊는 것. 주식 용어 '손절매'에서 나왔다.

The core is the idea of “loss.” Allure Korea pointed out that unlike the older word 절교 (breaking off a friendship), 손절 focuses on practical calculation rather than emotion — it assumes relationships, too, have costs and losses. It comes in several forms: 손절하다 (to cut off), 손절당하다 (to be cut off), and 손절각 (a cut-off is looming). These two syllables are the shortest way to say you've stopped talking to someone.

Where does 손절 come from? From the stop-loss to people

It starts on the stock market with 손절매 (損切賣): selling a stock that has dropped below what you paid, taking the loss before it drops further. In investing it's considered a basic discipline for keeping losses small. Shortened to 손절, it at some point started being applied to people instead of stocks.

Etoday covered a 2025 paper in the journal Urimal Yeongu by Baek Jeong-i of Seoul National University and Koo Young-san of Chungnam National University. Analyzing language in online communities, they found a word for cutting financial losses had widened to mean tidying up relationships. When Allure Korea ran a feature called “The Relationship Science of 손절” in 2020, it was clearly everyday language already.

Why it caught on

Why is 손절 used so much? Three reasons

One: stocks became everyday life. Etoday reports that young Koreans borrow other trading terms for relationships too: a singer you loved before they got famous is a 저점매수 (buying the dip), a degree and connections are 레버리지 (leverage), a relationship you've stuck with too long is a 매몰비용 (sunk cost). Trading-screen vocabulary has become a common language for relationships.

Two: lighter than 절교, clearer than 정리. 절교 (severing a friendship) sounds grave; 정리 (tidying up) is vague. 손절 packs the decision — “I ended it” — into two syllables. And, as Allure Korea noted, its practical edge suggests it ended without an emotional fight.

Three: we calculate relationships now. Etoday also cited “Life ROI” from Trend Korea 2027 by Seoul National University professor emeritus Kim Nan-do and colleagues: the habit of weighing relationships, work, even marriage by results versus input. 손절 is the name for the last step of that calculation. Etoday added, though, that using these words doesn't mean people actually treat each other like investment products.

Data

손절 by the numbers: over half of adults have pruned their network

In a 2020 article, Allure Korea cited a survey by job platform Saramin that asked 4,013 adults about “network dieting.” More than half said they had pruned their contacts.

Have you ever pruned your social network? (4,013 adults)
  • Yes53.7%
  • No46.3%100% minus “yes”

According to the same article, more people cut “those unlikely to stay in touch in future” (62%) than “those I hadn't talked to in the past year” (55.6%). The article dates the survey only as “last year” and doesn't say whether those two figures are shares of all respondents or only of those who pruned, so we charted just the first question, whose base is clear. The numbers say one thing: 손절 isn't a rare, extreme move. One in two adults has done it.

Is 손절 a cold word?

Views split two ways. Some, like Allure Korea, are uneasy with a word that weighs relationships in profit and loss; others see it as setting boundaries to protect yourself. In March 2026 CBS Nocut News, introducing a new book called The Art of 손절, described distancing yourself from people who drain you as a way of protecting yourself and taking back control of your life. The same two syllables are a cold calculation to one person and room to breathe to another. Either way, for the one who gets cut off, it hurts.
