What does 감다살 (gamdasal) mean? The Korean slang for “your taste is spot on”
감다살 shortens 감 다 살았네, “your touch is fully alive,” and praises sharp taste or instinct. Its opposites are 감다죽 and 감다뒤. Three syllables that went from K-pop headlines to slang explainers.
At a glance
- Meaning
- Short for 감 다 살았네 (“your touch is fully alive”). Praise for sharp taste, flair or instinct — in an outfit, a plan, a choice.
- Opposites
- 감다죽 (“your touch is dead”) and the cruder 감다뒤 (“your touch has croaked”). Asia Today glosses 감다뒤 as “no sense at all.”
- Spread
- In March 2025, Etoday called 감다살 and 감다죽 the “magic three syllables” that make the K-pop industry laugh or cry; in May, Seoul Economic Daily put 감다살 in its slang dictionary column.
- Origin
- Who first said it is unconfirmed. Seoul Economic Daily says only that it has been “spreading online recently.”
Last week our editor posted a pitch at a meeting, and the youngest team member left a one-word comment: “감다살.” Our editor smiled without being sure what it meant. Either way, it was a compliment. The problem: the same colleague looked at another team's poster and muttered, “That's 감다뒤.” Our editor started calculating how long until that word came their way.
감다살 isn't brand new. But on Google it still comes with “meaning,” “definition” and “origin” — and now also “감다살 AI” and “감다살체” (감다살 font). The things it praises have spread from people to AI output and typefaces. Today we sort out how the word works.
What does 감다살 (gamdasal) mean?
감다살
Short for 감 다 살았네, “your touch is fully alive”: praise for sharp taste, flair or instinct. Used for outfits, photos, plans, stage concepts — anything where judgment shows.
In Korean: '감 다 살았네'의 줄임말로, 센스와 감각이 제대로 살아 있다고 칭찬하는 말.
감 here is a feel for things: instinct, timing, taste. Seoul Economic Daily describes 감다살 as something you say “when a surprising result or move appears that you didn't expect.” It isn't just “well done”; it's “how did you even think of that?” On the other side sit 감다죽 (“the touch is dead”) and 감다뒤, which uses the rough verb 뒤지다 (to croak). In front of a boss, 감다죽 is the safer of the two.

Where does 감다살 come from?
The raw material is old. Koreans have long said 감 좋네 (“good feel”) or 감 떨어졌다 (“lost the feel”). 감다살 squeezes a whole sentence of that kind into three syllables. When the squeezing started isn't clear, but among dated records a March 2025 Etoday article is early. It called 감다살 and 감다죽 the “magic three syllables” of the K-pop business, separating agencies that made smart calls from ones that made odd ones.
From there the word widened. In May 2025, Seoul Economic Daily's slang column introduced it as everyday praise, with examples like a friend who aced an exam or a product that beat expectations. In July 2026, Asia Today's mid-year slang roundup paired 감다살 (“touch alive, good sense”) with 감다뒤 (“touch croaked, no sense”).
Why did 감다살 catch on? Three reasons
One: it's high-resolution praise. “Good job” praises the result; 감다살 praises the judgment behind it — the “how did you think to pick that?” It's especially handy where there's no right answer: planning, design, styling.
Two: it comes in a pair. One syllable turns 감다살 into its opposite, 감다죽. That's why Etoday called it three syllables that make people “laugh or cry.” Fans grade every agency decision as 살 or 죽, and the grading became a comment-section game.
Three: three syllables and done. Long compliments are awkward and short ones seem lazy; 감다살 sits in between. Leave just those three syllables in a comment and the message lands. If 밤티 is a short, sideways way to say “meh,” 감다살 is a short, pointed way to say “nailed it.”
감다살 in the headlines: from entertainment pages to slang dictionaries
감다살's résumé is written in headlines. In March 2025 it graded K-pop agencies in an entertainment story (Etoday); in April it reached a TV segment on correct Korean (JTBC); in May it got a slang-dictionary entry in a business daily (Seoul Economic Daily); and in July 2026 it made a mid-year roundup alongside its opposite 감다뒤 (Asia Today). A fandom's grading word became everyone's compliment in a little over a year. We found no published search-volume analysis, so we don't chart one.
What search suggests now is telling, too: “감다살 AI,” “감다살 music,” “감다살 font.” A word for human taste is now used to grade AI output, playlists and typefaces. People aren't the only ones competing on taste anymore — which may be where the word goes next.
감다살 (gamdasal): frequently asked questions
Q. What does 감다살 (gamdasal) mean?
It shortens 감 다 살았네, “your touch is fully alive,” and praises sharp taste, flair or instinct — in outfits, photos, plans and other places where judgment shows.
Q. What's the opposite of 감다살?
감다죽, short for “the touch is dead,” and the cruder 감다뒤, which uses the slang verb 뒤지다 (to croak). Skip 감다뒤 in formal settings.
Q. Where does 감다살 come from?
It compresses everyday phrases like 감 좋다 (“good feel”) and 감 떨어졌다 (“lost the feel”). Who coined it is unconfirmed; among dated records, a March 2025 Etoday article on the K-pop industry is one of the earliest.
Q. Does 감다살 mean “emotions fully alive”?
Some posts say so, but news reports such as Seoul Economic Daily and Asia Today all read 감 as sense or flair. It's praise for judgment and taste, not feelings.
Q. What's 감다살 in English?
No exact match, but “great taste,” “you nailed it” or “on point” come close. Its opposite, 감다죽, is close to “lost your touch.”
So 감다살 praises the instinct, not just the outcome. Our editor, hoping to avoid a 감다뒤 on the next pitch, is re-picking the poster colors. If you have a sharper definition, add it to the 감다살 entry in the dictionary.
