Originally meant alert to racial and social injustice; now often used disapprovingly, mainly by critics on the right, for progressive views seen as extreme — "They called the ad too woke."

원래 인종 차별 같은 사회 불의에 '깨어 있다'는 뜻의 영어 속어였지만, 지금은 진보적 태도가 지나치다고 비꼬는 비판적 표현으로 더 많이 쓴다. 누가 쓰느냐에 따라 칭찬도 조롱도 될 수 있다.
