What does 테무인간 (temu-ingan) mean? How a shopping app became a way to rate people

테무인간, “Temu human,” describes someone who looks the part but lacks substance or polish. It began as a comedian's “slang prediction” in February 2025 and, a year and a half later, was being cited in newspaper columns.

At a glance

Meaning
Someone who looks the part but falls short on substance or polish — named after Temu, the app where cheap things look great in photos.
Origin
On February 14, 2025, comedian Moon Sang-hoon of the YouTube channel 빠더너스 (BDNS) introduced it in a Short predicting 2025's slang: “someone who works hard but whose quality is meh” (Insight).
Shift
By 2026 the meaning had moved to “someone who only looks impressive” (Asia Today, July) and “flashy outside, little substance inside” (Segye Ilbo, October).
Careful
It compares a person to cheap goods. Fine as a joke among friends; in a performance review, the speaker may come off as the 테무인간.

Our editor had a 2,900-won phone stand in their cart. In the photos it was perfect. The real thing drooped the moment a phone touched it. That day a colleague said, “Total 테무인간. It's trying hard, though.” Our editor never quite dared to ask whether that was about the stand or about them.

Timeline

How was 테무인간 born? Three years, one line

  1. July 2023

    Temu arrives in Korea

Chinese e-commerce platform Temu opened a Korean-language store. By WiseApp·Retail's count it had 520,000 users that August (Segye Ilbo).

  2. January 2025

    An 8.23-million-user app

A year and a half later, Temu had 8.23 million monthly users. Millions now shared the same experience: low prices, and items that didn't quite match the photo. The soil for a new word was ready.

  3. February 14, 2025

    Mr. Moon's “slang forecast”

Moon Sang-hoon of the comedy channel 빠더너스 released a Short called “Slang that will be big in 2025,” offering 테무인간 alongside coinages like 무지컬 and 손절미. Definition: “someone who works hard but whose quality is meh.” Example: “They're always busy, but kind of a 테무인간” (Insight, Feb 19, 2025).

  4. February 2025

    “Even the sound is perfect”

According to Insight, viewers commented that “there's not a dud in the bunch” and “even the sound is perfect.” A word invented as a prediction started being used for real.

  5. July 24, 2026

    Into the mid-year roundup

Asia Today's roundup of 2026's first-half slang listed 테무인간 as “good to know,” glossed as “someone who only looks impressive.” The “works hard” part had dropped out; “looks impressive” had come in.

  6. October 2, 2026

    A newspaper column

Segye Ilbo's [설왕설래] column named 테무인간, alongside 엠비스찬, as a typical new coinage — “flashy on the outside, little substance inside” — and noted that recent slang increasingly mixes in mockery.

So 테무인간 is that rare slang word that was announced before it was born. Its maker said “this will catch on,” and it did. Along the way the meaning moved a little. At first it was a fond tease for someone who at least tries; now it's closer to a verdict on someone who's all packaging.

Meaning

What does 테무인간 (temu-ingan) mean?

테무인간

Temu + 인간 (human): someone who looks the part but falls short on substance or polish. It started out meaning “someone who works hard but turns in so-so results.”

In Korean: 쇼핑앱 '테무'와 '인간'을 합친 말로, 그럴듯해 보이지만 실속이나 완성도는 기대에 못 미치는 사람.

The key is the gap between the photo and the real thing. Anyone who has shopped on Temu knows the feeling — somewhere between “not bad for the price” and “still, come on” — and the word moves it onto people. So a 테무인간 isn't necessarily lazy. The colleague who's always busy but whose work is a bit flimsy, the date who's dazzling at first and disappointing later: both qualify. Its cousins include 젬민이, someone who lets AI make every decision, and 엠비스찬, someone who treats MBTI like a religion — all “a person who…” coinages from 2025–2026.

  • 프로필 사진은 완전 연예인인데 만나 보니 테무인간이더라Their profile pic looked like a celebrity, but in person — total 테무인간.Blind-date debrief, friends' group chat
  • 보고서 분량은 30장인데 내용은 3장… 이거 테무 보고서 아니야?Thirty pages of report, three pages of content… isn't this a Temu report? In the hallway after a meeting

For a comparison to land, everyone has to know the experience. By WiseApp·Retail's count, Temu's monthly users in Korea jumped from 520,000 in August 2023 to 8.23 million in January 2025, and in May 2026 it ranked second among general shopping apps with about 9.05 million (Herald Business). That's roughly one in six Koreans opening the app each month — which is why “like something from Temu” needs no explanation.

FAQ

테무인간 (temu-ingan): frequently asked questions

Q. What does 테무인간 (temu-ingan) mean?

It combines the shopping app Temu with 인간 (human) and describes someone who looks the part but falls short on substance or polish. It was first introduced as “someone who works hard but whose quality is meh.”

Q. Who came up with 테무인간?

Insight reported that Moon Sang-hoon of the comedy YouTube channel 빠더너스 introduced it in a February 14, 2025 Short called “Slang that will be big in 2025.” He invented it, predicted it would catch on, and it did.

Q. Does 테무인간 just mean “all show”?

That's how it's mostly used now. In 2026, Asia Today and Segye Ilbo glossed it as “someone who only looks impressive” and “flashy outside, little substance inside.” But the original carried a sense of “at least they try,” so it fits a hard worker with so-so results better than a slacker.

Q. Is 테무인간 an insult?

It isn't a swear word, but it does compare a person to cheap goods. As a joke with friends or about yourself it's fine; used to judge a colleague, it comes across as rude.

Q. What's 테무인간 in English?

“All show and no substance” or “looks good on paper” come close. Jokingly calling someone a “knockoff” has a similar feel.

So 테무인간 takes the shopping-app gap between photo and reality and applies it to people. Our editor's phone stand is now held together with a rubber band. It's still trying hard — so by the original definition, it's still a 테무인간. If you have a sharper definition, add it to the 테무인간 entry in the dictionary.
