What does 알잘딱깔센 (aljalttakkkalsen) mean? How a streamer's sigh became an office instruction
알잘딱깔센 is an acronym for 알아서 잘 딱 깔끔하고 센스 있게 — “on your own, well, just right, neatly and with flair”: reading the room and getting it done without being told how. It came from a streamer's 2018 broadcast, hit No. 1 on Korea's real-time search charts thanks to BTS, and in a 2026 survey showed a 69.9-point awareness gap between people in their 20s and those 60 and up.

In their first week on the job, a junior colleague of our editor got this email from the team lead: “Please do this report 알잘딱깔센.” The junior stared at it for 30 minutes, then asked the next desk: “Is that the name of an approval form?” It wasn't. It was the shortest — and hardest — work instruction in the world.
The phrase came back into the news around this year's Hangul Day. In a survey reported by Herald Economy and News1, 알잘딱깔센 was one of the slang words with the biggest awareness gap between generations — everyday speech for people in their 20s, a code for people in their 60s. Today we crack the code.
What does 알잘딱깔센 (aljalttakkkalsen) mean?
알잘딱깔센
An acronym of 알아서 잘 딱 깔끔하고 센스 있게: reading the situation and getting what's needed done neatly and with flair, without step-by-step instructions. Also shortened to 알잘딱.
In Korean: '알아서 잘 딱 깔끔하고 센스 있게'의 앞 글자를 모은 말로, 일일이 설명하지 않아도 상황을 읽고 필요한 일을 깔끔하게 해내는 것.
It works as praise and as a request. “They're so 알잘딱깔센” is top-tier praise; “do it 알잘딱깔센” is a request that skips the details. Asia Economy noted that the phrase struck a chord with office workers who constantly get vague instructions from bosses and clients. For the person on the receiving end, few things are as daunting as “just make it look good.” The phrase gave that feeling a five-syllable name.

Where does 알잘딱깔센 come from? A sigh during a design contest
It starts in June 2018 on a broadcast by streamer Woowakgood. According to Asia Economy and Edaily, the stream was a live design contest for a collaboration with the sportswear brand FILA. When viewers kept submitting predictable ideas, Woowakgood vented, asking them roughly to “handle it yourselves, well, neatly and with flair — just right, please.” Take the first syllables and you get 알잘딱깔센.
The brand turned the phrase straight into merchandise. Financial News reported in November 2018 that for the collaboration's second season, FILA created a fictional designer named “Alzar Takkarsen,” after the fans' 알잘딱깔센. The phrase then reached the general public in late May 2020, when BTS took it on in a slang quiz on Naver V Live. According to Edaily, Jimin joked after hearing the answer that King Sejong, creator of the Korean alphabet, would weep — and the phrase hit No. 1 on a portal's real-time search chart. In 2022, Hana Bank ran an ad campaign built on 알잘딱깔센 together with Woowakgood's team (Maeil Business).
Why did 알잘딱깔센 go viral? Three reasons
One: everyone has heard it before. “Make it look good” and “just handle it” have been instructions at Korean offices and schools for decades. 알잘딱깔센 isn't so much a new word as five old nags compressed into one. Even first-time listeners laugh once it's spelled out, because they already know every part of it.
Two: it sounds fun. Al, jal, ttak, kkal, sen. The final consonants give it a rhythm that sticks like a spell, so much so that the acronym got shortened again, to 알잘딱. When producer Na Young-seok misspelled it “알잘깔딱센” on tvN's New Journey to the West: Earth Arcade in 2022 and IVE's An Yu-jin immediately set it straight, it showed how firmly the order had set (Edaily, Asia Economy).
Three: companies embraced it early. FILA invented a designer; a bank put it in its ads. Maekyung Economy wrote in 2021 that Gen Z buzzwords were coming from streaming platforms like Twitch, citing 알잘딱깔센 as an example. Words brands use ride their ads out of the stream. It took four years for a game streamer's phrase to reach a banking app commercial.
알잘딱깔센 by the numbers: a 69.9-point gap between the 20s and the 60s
Ahead of this year's Hangul Day, Elimnet's Now&Survey asked 1,002 adults aged 19 and up whether they knew the meaning of 20 representative slang words. People in their 20s or younger knew 14.6 on average; those 60 and up knew 4.5. For all 20 words, the youngest group had the highest awareness and the oldest the lowest. These are the words with the widest gap between the two.
- 점메추 (lunch pick?)73.6 pts20s or younger 80.2%, 60+ 6.6%
- 억텐 (forced hype)70.9 pts
- 알잘딱깔센69.9 pts
- 럭키비키 (lucky vibe)67.3 pts
- 오운완 (workout done)65 pts
알잘딱깔센 had the third-widest gap, after 점메추 (“recommend me a lunch”) and 억텐 (“forced hype”), followed by 럭키비키 and 오운완. How often people use slang splits by age too: in a PMI survey of 1,000 people aged 20–59 cited by News1, those who said they “often” use slang were 34.0% of people in their 20s, 21.3% in their 30s, 11.1% in their 40s and 7.5% in their 50s. If your team lead says 알잘딱깔센, they're in a fairly exclusive club.
The trap in “do it 알잘딱깔센”
As praise, 알잘딱깔센 is great. As an instruction, it's a little risky. Ask for a result “with flair” without saying what you want, and all the blame for missing the mark lands on the person doing the work. It's worth remembering the phrase began as the sigh of someone tired of predictable contest entries. In the News1 piece, Professor Yoon Seok-jin of Chungnam National University's Korean literature department said slang builds bonds within a generation but can raise language barriers between generations. If a team lead's “do it 알잘딱깔센” came with one line of actual explanation, that would be truly 알잘딱깔센.

Q. Where does 알잘딱깔센 come from?
In June 2018, streamer Woowakgood was running a design contest for a FILA collaboration; when viewers kept sending predictable ideas, the streamer asked them to handle it “on your own, neatly and with flair” (Asia Economy, Edaily). It spread widely after BTS took it on in a V Live quiz in late May 2020.
Q. What's 알잘딱깔센 in English?
There's no exact match, but “use your judgment and nail it” or “read the room and handle it” come close. As praise for a person, “they just get it.”
Q. How do you pronounce 알잘딱깔센?
Roughly as written: al-jal-ttak-kkal-ssen. People usually say all five syllables quickly in one go.
Q. What's the opposite of 알잘딱깔센?
There's no set opposite. The other end would be doing only the bare minimum, or doing it wrong even after being told. A clip of Woowakgood's stream trying to invent an opposite became a talking point.
So 알잘딱깔센 compresses five old nags into one spell. For the record, our editor's junior colleague got the report approved after three rewrites. The team lead's feedback was one line: “Very 알잘딱깔센.” A line of explanation at the start would have saved two of those rewrites. If you have a sharper definition, add it to the 알잘딱깔센 entry in the dictionary.
