What does 뇌피셜 (noe-pisyeol) mean? Korean slang for an “official” that exists only in your head
뇌피셜 combines 뇌 (brain) and “official” to describe passing off a personal guess as fact. It showed up in Korean news as “recent slang” in 2016–2017 — and ten years later it's being traded in the National Assembly and Seoul's city council.
At a glance
- Meaning
- 뇌 (brain) + “official.” Presenting an unfounded personal opinion or guess as if it were established fact.
- Origin
- Who coined it, and when, is unconfirmed. In January 2017 the Segye Ilbo called it “recently coined slang,” and many early uses involved sports transfer and free-agent rumors.
- Opposite
- “Official.” In 2018, Edaily's guide to crypto slang defined 오피셜 as “the opposite of 뇌피셜: fact.”
- Now
- Stories marking the 100th Hangul Day in 2026 cited it as a typical Korean–English blend (Yonhap, Asia Economy), and politicians on both sides use it to dismiss each other's claims.
At lunch, a colleague announced with total confidence, “They're remodeling our floor next month.” Asked for a source, the colleague thought for a moment: “That's just my feeling.” Our youngest team member, sitting opposite, summed it up quietly: “Ah, 뇌피셜.” Our editor was struck by how precisely one word captured the moment.
For slang, 뇌피셜 is fairly old. Yet searches for it still come with “meaning,” “origin” and “in English.” Around the 100th Hangul Day in October 2026, Yonhap, Asia Economy and Seoul Economic Daily all used it as an example of new Korean words — and in the same weeks, it was being said in the National Assembly and city council. Here's how a ten-year-old internet word reached public life. No 뇌피셜 involved, of course.
What does 뇌피셜 (noe-pisyeol) mean?
뇌피셜
Brain + official: presenting a personal guess or unfounded opinion as if it were established fact — a claim that's “official” only inside your own head.
In Korean: '뇌'와 '오피셜(official)'을 합친 말로, 근거 없는 개인적인 생각이나 추측을 공식 사실처럼 말하는 것.
Asia Economy glossed it as “a personal thought without basis,” Seoul Economic Daily as “a personal thought or unfounded claim.” The key is the irony of “official.” You speak with the certainty of a formal announcement, but the only issuing office is your own brain. So aimed at someone else, it's an attack; put in front of your own words — “this is my 뇌피셜, but…” — it becomes a modest disclaimer. It has relatives, too: 지피셜, “heard it from someone I know,” and 본인피셜, “confirmed by the person themselves.”

Where does 뇌피셜 come from? “Recent slang” in the news around 2016
뇌피셜 began appearing in the press in late 2016. The earliest article we could find through Daum's news search is a Herald Economy piece from November 2016, with 뇌피셜 set in quotation marks. A month later, SBS's baseball podcast 뭐니볼 said it had used “every 지피셜 and 뇌피셜” to dig into where free agents would land. In January 2017, the Segye Ilbo, writing about false memories, mentioned “the recently coined slang 뇌피셜 (insisting that something you imagined is true).”
That May, the JoongAng Ilbo added a footnote to a story: “brain + official; believing wrong information is official fact.” In October, a Seoul Shinmun story opened with an office exchange — “Sir, isn't that a bit of a 뇌피셜?” — and described the word as “SNS slang that has crossed into daily life.” By July 2018 there was a web variety show titled 뇌피셜 on the History channel. In little more than a year, it went from needing a footnote to being a show title.
Why has 뇌피셜 lasted? Three reasons
One: nothing else did the job. Korean had words for guesses, wild guesses and hearsay, but no single word to needle someone's confident, unsourced claim. 뇌피셜 carries both “no basis” and “but totally sure of it.” Words like that rarely get pushed out once they settle in.
Two: the pattern was easy. Asia Economy described blends like 뇌피셜 as “a change in the Korean language” rather than “a distortion of Hangul.” And “-피셜” did become a template: heard from an acquaintance, 지피셜; said by the person themselves, 본인피셜. A word that spawns a template lives longer because of it. 갓생, from “god” + 인생 (life), belongs to the same family.
Three: an age of information overload needed it. Online forums and social media are flooded with unsourced certainty every day. “Isn't that 뇌피셜?” became a way to ask for a source without being rude. In October 2026, YTN listed 뇌피셜 with 갓생, 멘붕 (“mental breakdown”) and 노잼 (“no fun”) as words “already settled into everyday life.”
뇌피셜 in the news: from forums to the National Assembly
In 2026, 뇌피셜 is used in public settings too. On August 27, Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon (People Power Party) told the city council that the threshold in a government and ruling-party plan to hand permit authority for small redevelopment projects to district offices “seems like 뇌피셜” (Edaily). In September, Democratic Party spokesperson Cho Kye-won dismissed opposition allegations about a minister nominee as “nothing but lawmaker Han Dong-hoon's 뇌피셜” (Kyungbuk Domin Ilbo). Both sides reach for the word when calling the other's claims baseless.
The opposite use has grown too. Panelists on current-affairs shows hedging with “this is my 뇌피셜, so…” and “most of this is just my 뇌피셜, but…” appeared verbatim in Nocut News and Dong-A Ilbo video stories in October 2026. A word born as an attack now also works as a disclaimer that you're guessing. In the Yonhap story, Hanyang University Korean literature professor Yu Seong-ho said it's natural for slang to come and go, but that broadcasters with wide reach should avoid putting slang straight into on-screen captions. We couldn't find statistics measuring how often 뇌피셜 is used, so there are no numbers here. We can't fill the gap with our own 뇌피셜.
뇌피셜 (noe-pisyeol): frequently asked questions
Q. What does 뇌피셜 (noe-pisyeol) mean?
It combines 뇌 (brain) and the English “official,” and means presenting an unfounded personal opinion or guess as if it were established fact.
Q. What's the opposite of 뇌피셜?
오피셜, “official”: a formally confirmed fact or announcement. In between sit 지피셜 (heard from an acquaintance) and 본인피셜 (stated by the person themselves).
Q. Where does 뇌피셜 come from?
Who coined it, and when, is unconfirmed. It appeared in Korean news from late 2016, and in January 2017 the Segye Ilbo called it “recently coined slang.” It's often said to come from the “official” of sports transfer news, but there's no direct evidence.
Q. What's 뇌피셜 in English?
There's no exact match, but “just my theory,” “pure speculation” or “made up” come close. “Headcanon,” a personal interpretation of a fictional world, is similar but narrower.
Q. Is 뇌피셜 an insult?
It isn't a swear word, but said about someone else's claim it means “talking without any basis.” Put in front of your own words — “this is my 뇌피셜, but…” — it's a modest way to flag a guess.
So 뇌피셜 borrows the word “official” to call out a lack of evidence. For the record, our colleague's remodeling rumor still hasn't gone official. Our editor has decided to tidy their desk just in case — a decision based purely on the editor's own 뇌피셜. If you have a sharper definition, add it to the 뇌피셜 entry in the dictionary.
