Meaning
Living diligently and on plan — keeping small daily goals rather than chasing big success.
Origin
“God” + 생 (生, life). It spread among young Koreans from around 2020, after COVID-19 hit.
Numbers
In a Seoul Institute analysis, mentions rose from about 270,000 in 2020 to about 640,000 in 2022, while YOLO declined.
Careful
Critics warn that when 갓생 turns into another competition, it can lead to burnout.

On New Year's Day, one of our editors set a 갓생 plan: up at 6 a.m., 30 minutes of reading, an hour of exercise. They kept it until January 3. On the morning of January 4, turning off the alarm, they thought: today is a 걍생 day — just living.

갓생 is less a new word now than an everyday one. Type it into Google and “meaning” comes with “routine,” “in English” and “how to.” As many people want the method as the definition. Here's where 갓생 came from and why it has lasted.

Meaning

What does 갓생 mean?

갓생

“God” + 생 (life): living diligently and on plan. Someone who lives this way is a 갓생러 (gatsaeng-er).

In Korean: '갓(God)'과 '인생'의 '생'을 합친 말로, 부지런하고 계획적으로 사는 삶.

In Korean slang, 갓 (god) is a prefix meaning “top-tier,” as in 갓겜 (a god-tier game). But the “top” in 갓생 is about process, not results: stacking small habits like waking early, studying ten minutes a day or logging workouts. That's why it pairs with verbs and nouns: “갓생 산다” (living the 갓생), “갓생 루틴” (a 갓생 routine).

Where does 갓생 come from? A word the pandemic grew

갓생 really took off after COVID-19. With so much time stuck indoors, young people started filling their days with small routines they could do at home. According to a Seoul Institute analysis summarized by Daily Pop, 갓생 spread from around 2020, alongside the keywords study, exercise and time management. “Miracle morning” (early-morning self-improvement), 카공 (studying in cafés) and the “no-spend challenge” came from the same wave.

Why it caught on

Why did 갓생 catch on? Three reasons

One: people needed something they could control. Housing and jobs may be out of reach, but getting up at 6 tomorrow is your call. 갓생 offers small, certain wins.

Two: it's easy to post. Wake-up times, study hours and workouts all fit in one photo. 갓생 and social-media “proof” culture fit from the start — 오운완 (“today's workout, done”) is its classic partner.

Three: YOLO fatigue. As “you only live once” and 플렉스 (flexing) faded, “live today diligently” took their place. The numbers below show the handover.

Data

갓생 by the numbers: mentions doubled in two years

The Seoul Institute measured how often lifestyle keywords were mentioned on blogs and elsewhere. Within about a year of appearing, 갓생 overtook YOLO and flex. In a KOBACO survey of 2,000 people aged 20–59, 50.5% knew the word — 79.5% among people in their 20s.

Mentions of 갓생, YOLO and flex (×10,000)
  • 갓생 202027
  • 갓생 202264
  • Flex 202034
  • Flex 202220
  • YOLO 202020
  • YOLO 202210

The top ways to practice it were self-improvement (41.6%), investing (37.3%) and regular exercise (37.2%), per KOBACO. In a 2023 Albachon survey, 77.4% of respondents said they pursue 갓생. It's less a trend now than a way of life.

The 갓생 trap — and 걍생

In January 2024, Kyunghyang Shinmun examined “the 갓생 trap.” 갓생 can pull people out of lethargy, it argued, but forcing one standard on everyone leads to pressure, self-blame and comparison. Experts quoted in the piece advised starting with small, achievable goals of your own. The backlash even produced a word: 걍생, “just living.” Our editor now splits the week between 갓생 days and 걍생 days.

FAQ

갓생 (gatsaeng): frequently asked questions

Q. What does 갓생러 mean?

Someone living the 갓생 — the English suffix “-er” added. See the 갓생러 entry too.
