What does 어쩔티비 (eojjeol-tibi) mean? Why Korean kids added a TV to “so what?”
어쩔티비 tacks “TV” onto 어쩌라고 (“so what?”), making a teasing comeback that brushes off whatever you just said. It spread as an elementary-school word game in 2021, and in fall 2026 it was revived as the out-of-date slang of a 60-something intern in a hit film.
At a glance
- Meaning
- 어쩌라고 (“so what?”) plus TV. Used to cut someone off and tease: “And? Not my problem.”
- Origin
- Who said it first is unconfirmed. In October 2021, Korean media described it as “a word game popular among elementary schoolers these days” (Star News).
- Variants
- The comeback is 저쩔티비, followed by 안물티비 (“didn't ask”) and 안궁티비 (“don't care”). People swap in other appliances, like fridges and washing machines.
- Now
- Per Edaily's analysis, search interest over the past year is about 2% of its peak. In the film “The Intern,” released in September 2026, the 60-something lead uses it and is told it's already passé (Hankook Ilbo).
Walking out of the Korean remake of “The Intern,” a 64-year-old dad asked his 26-year-old daughter what on earth the old intern in the film had shouted at the office. The people are made up; every fact in the conversation has a source.
What does 어쩔티비 (eojjeol-tibi) mean? A 26-year-old daughter explains
- Dad (64)Jimin, that old man said “어쩔티비?” to the young staff. What's he want them to do with the TV?
- Jimin (26)Haha, the TV is just stuck on. The point is 어쩔, from 어쩌라고 — “so what?” You say it to shut down whatever someone just said.
- Dad (64)Then why not just say 어쩌라고? Why the TV?
- Jimin (26)That's the mystery. Incheon city's webzine explains it as “so what, go watch TV,” but Namuwiki says the origin is unclear and there are only theories. Tacking on random stuff to annoy people is half the fun.
- Dad (64)The actor said in an interview there's even 어쩔냉장고, “so-what fridge.” And “why is there a so-what washing machine?”
- Jimin (26)Right, that was in Edaily. It's a comeback game. One person says 어쩔티비, the other says 저쩔티비, then 안물티비, 안궁티비 — “didn't ask,” “don't care.” The longer the appliance name, the more you win.
- Dad (64)Since when do people say this?
- Jimin (26)It blew up in fall 2021. A Star News story that October mentions BTS trading “어쩔티비, 저쩔티비” with fans and calls it “a word game popular among elementary schoolers these days.” It was famous as kid talk.
- Dad (64)Do people still say it?
- Jimin (26)That's why the movie's funny. Edaily analyzed Naver searches and found interest over the past year is about 2% of its peak. Hankook Ilbo's story says the coworkers in the film react with “that's already over.”
- Dad (64)So what if I say it to the security guard tomorrow?
- Jimin (26)Don't. It's a teasing word, for messing around with friends. Say it to an adult and it's just rude.
- Dad (64)Fine. But next time you put off the dishes and say “어쩔티비,” I'm saying 저쩔냉장고.
- Jimin (26)…Dad, that was kind of 킹받네.
어쩔티비
“So what?” with a TV tacked on: a teasing comeback that cuts off whatever the other person just said. The reply is 저쩔티비, and other appliances or objects can be piled on to stretch it out.
In Korean: '어쩌라고'에 TV를 붙인 말로, 상대의 말을 끊으며 '그래서 뭐?' 하고 놀리는 표현.
- 나 숙제 다 했는데? 응~ 어쩔티비~I finished my homework, so? Uh-huh~ 어쩔티비~Elementary-school break time
- 어쩔티비? 저쩔냉장고. 안물티비 안궁티비어쩔티비? 저쩔-fridge. Didn't-ask-TV, don't-care-TV.Three comebacks in, no end in sight
- 팀장님이 갑자기 "어쩔티비?" 하셔서 회의실이 조용해졌다The team lead suddenly said “어쩔티비?” and the meeting room went silent.Live from the department group chat
- 어쩔티비는 이제 아빠들이 쓰는 말이야어쩔티비 is a dad word now.A middle-school niece's cold verdict
Why did 어쩔티비 catch on?
The point is that it makes no sense. 어쩌라고 on its own is just rude, but add a TV and rudeness turns into a game. Nonsense can't be argued with. Instead of getting angry, the other person reaches for a fridge, and from there it's a contest over who can name the longest appliance. That's how it went from an elementary-school word game to idol fan chats and variety-show quizzes. A similar meme built from “not my problem” is 알빠노. But in 2026, 어쩔티비 became a line for a 60-something intern in a film. Once slang becomes “a dad word,” the trend has moved on.
어쩔티비 (eojjeol-tibi): frequently asked questions
Q. What does 어쩔티비 (eojjeol-tibi) mean?
It adds “TV” to 어쩌라고 (“so what?”) and is used to cut someone off and tease them: “And? Not my problem.” Most explanations say the TV itself means nothing.
Q. What do 어쩔티비, 저쩔티비, 안물티비 and 안궁티비 mean?
It's a comeback game. 어쩔티비 (“so what”) is answered with 저쩔티비, then 안물티비 (“didn't ask”) and 안궁티비 (“don't care”). Long versions add 우짤래미, 저짤래미, and the TV can be swapped for a fridge or washing machine.
Q. Where does 어쩔티비 come from?
There's no confirmed origin. In October 2021, Korean media called it “a word game popular among elementary schoolers these days.” Theories say it came from YouTuber nicknames ending in “TV,” or shortens “so what, go watch TV,” but they're all guesses.
Q. What's 어쩔티비 in English?
“So what?”, “Who asked?” or “Whatever” come close. If you want to keep the TV, there's the pun translation “So whaTV.”
Q. Do people still say 어쩔티비?
Per Edaily, search interest over the past year (October 2025 to September 2026) was about 2% of its peak, and the 2026 film “The Intern” plays it as outdated slang. Searches asking what it means are still common, though.
So 어쩔티비 borrows a TV to turn “so what?” into a joke. Our editor tried it on the way home today — silently, at a message chasing a deadline. If you have a sharper definition, add it to the 어쩔티비 entry in the dictionary.
