What does 벼락거지 (byeorakgeoji) mean? Korean slang for getting poor by standing still
벼락거지 (byeorakgeoji) is self-mocking Korean slang for someone whose income hasn't changed but who becomes relatively poor as home and stock prices surge. It appeared in Korea's 2020 housing boom and came back when the KOSPI broke 5,300 in 2026.
At a glance
- Meaning
- The reverse of 벼락부자 (“overnight rich”). Your income barely changes, but home or stock prices shoot up, so without assets you feel suddenly poorer. Used self-mockingly for that situation or that person.
- Origin
- Spread in 2020 as home and jeonse (lump-sum lease) prices surged, alongside 영끌, “panic buying” and 빚투 (Money Today). Who coined it isn't confirmed.
- Comeback
- As the KOSPI broke 4,000 and then 5,000 in 2025–2026, it returned alongside FOMO (Kyeonggi Ilbo, Seoul Economic Daily).
- Careful
- It's self-deprecating. Calling someone else 벼락거지 turns it into a jab.
A college friend of our editor got married in 2019 and chose a jeonse lease instead of buying. A prudent choice. A year later, the friend posted one line in the group chat: “I didn't do anything and I got poorer.” That sentence already had a name.
Six years of 벼락거지: from home prices to stocks to bonuses

A housing surge gets a name
Rounding up 2020's “bitter real-estate slang” in December, Money Today said 벼락거지 was what people called those who hadn't bought, or who had sold and moved into a lease, only to become “rental refugees” overnight. 패닉바잉 (panic buying), 영끌 and 빚투 (debt-funded investing) became everyday words the same year.

TV takes it up
MBC's investigative show Straight ran a New Year special, “KOSPI 3,000 and 벼락거지.” With stocks following home prices up, the word widened from a housing term to one for the whole asset market.

The opposite of overnight rich
In a column titled “Suddenly rich vs. suddenly poor,” the JoongAng Ilbo cited a calculation that a median-income Seoul household would need 15 years and six months of income to buy a home, writing that the hope of working and saving for a house had collapsed.

“Don't let me be 벼락거지 again”
As the KOSPI broke 4,000 for the first time and climbed to 4,200, Kyeonggi Ilbo reported “FOMO spreading again.” Margin loans hit 25.8 trillion won, the year's high.

KOSPI 5,300, and the word returns
The day the KOSPI first passed 5,300 intraday, the Seoul Economic Daily reported that 벼락거지 — a term born in the housing surge under the Moon Jae-in government — was being talked about again. Broadcasters such as KNN covered the sigh of “I feel like I'm the only poor one.”

Now it's inside the office
A Kyunghyang Shinmun column, “When someone else's bonus becomes my worthlessness,” used reports of huge chip-industry bonuses to argue that the FOMO and 벼락거지-style relative deprivation of the asset boom had “jumped over to the workplace.”
What does 벼락거지 (byeorakgeoji) mean?
벼락거지
The opposite of 벼락부자, “overnight rich”: someone whose income has barely changed but who becomes relatively poor almost overnight as home or stock prices surge — or that situation. Usually said about yourself.
In Korean: '벼락부자'의 반대말. 소득은 그대로인데 자산 가격이 급등해 자산 없는 사람이 상대적으로 가난해진 상황이나 그런 사람을 자조적으로 이르는 말.
The key word is “relatively.” Your balance didn't shrink; everyone else's assets grew while you stayed put. Kyeonggi Ilbo glossed it as a self-mocking name for people whose income barely changed while stocks and real estate soared. If 영끌 (“scraping together every last won”) is the scramble to avoid becoming 벼락거지, 벼락거지 is how the people who didn't scramble introduce themselves.
- 전세 연장하고 왔는데 같은 단지 매매가가 2년 새 3억 올랐대. 나 벼락거지 된 듯Just renewed my lease — apparently units in my complex went up 300 million won in two years. I think I'm 벼락거지 now.Typical use around 2020–2021
- 다들 주식 얘기만 하는데 예금만 한 나는 벼락거지 확정이네Everyone's talking stocks, and I only had savings. Confirmed 벼락거지.Lunch on a KOSPI record day
- 벼락거지 될까 봐 무리해서 들어갔다가 물렸어I was so scared of being 벼락거지 that I overextended — and got stuck. One way FOMO ends

벼락거지 (byeorakgeoji): frequently asked questions
Q. What does 벼락거지 (byeorakgeoji) mean?
The opposite of 벼락부자 (“overnight rich”): self-mocking Korean slang for someone whose income is unchanged but who becomes relatively poor because home or stock prices surged, or for that situation.
Q. When did 벼락거지 appear?
It spread in 2020 as home and lease prices surged, alongside 영끌, panic buying and 빚투 (Money Today, Dec 6, 2020). Who coined it isn't confirmed. It came back during the 2025–2026 KOSPI rally.
Q. What's 벼락거지 in English?
There's no set translation; “suddenly poor” or “left behind by the asset boom” work. The JoongAng Ilbo's English edition rendered 벼락부자, 벼락거지 as “Suddenly rich vs. suddenly poor.” For the psychology, it often goes with FOMO.
Q. How is 벼락거지 different from FOMO?
FOMO is the fear of falling behind; 벼락거지 is closer to the feeling that you already have. Kyeonggi Ilbo described people rushing late into the market for fear of becoming 벼락거지 as “FOMO spreading again.”
Q. Is 벼락거지 an insult?
It's mostly used about yourself. Aimed at someone else, it can mock their circumstances, so use it carefully.
So 벼락거지 is a word born from comparison, not from numbers. That's why when home prices rest it shows up in stocks, and when stocks rest it shows up in bonuses. These days, when returns come up in the group chat, our editor's friend posts a photo from a walk — their own way of beating the word. Related reading: 영끌 and 현타.
